Overview of the project

I have found this group project quite a challenge, but at the same time I have found it pretty good and felt that I have learnt quite a bit through doing it. From doing this I have found the advantages with working independently in respect if you like something you can keep it and you can do things more at your own kind of pace. However working in a group, you all have to agree even if perhaps you prefer something that you might not. Plus working at the same pace as everyone else, although for me I think this gave me a push not to leave things to that last minute and instead progressing steadily with the rest of the group and not falling to far behind.

Quick Changes

Before hand in this afternoon, we had a quick look at the posters to see if there was anything that could be changed.

With the A4 poster I played around a bit with the positioning of the text. Maribel pointed out that there wasn't the logo for the Uni or the College. Mark had a copy of each logo, so he changed the colour of them so that they were white and sent them to me so that I could drop them onto the poster.

This is the poster which I showed the group, although I did have BA & FdA before the Digitial Media Design Show, it as decided to take it away.

After playing around a bit, this is the end result of the A4 poster.

With the A3 poster there was only the details of the show and there wasn't the information about Facebook, Twitter and email. Because this also needed to be included on the poster it meant having to play around with the positioning of the existing text on the poster.

The poster on the left, is the original one, and the poster on the right is the final one. I played around quite a bit with the positioning. I made the text smaller in order to fit in the gap, however the space on the shelf was pretty small to fit in all the content that was needed. Mark suggested moving the text so that it was in bottom right hand corner and over the shelf to make the most of the empty space. By doing this it meant that I could do the same thing with the social media information on the left hand side. I think the new positioning works really well now and the content is well spaced that it doesn't looked squashed together.

Before saving out as a jpeg, I cloned the bottles to get rid of the reflection on them, just to see how it would look. I asked the group what they thought and they decided that it looked better with the reflection on the bottles, so I just deleted the layer that I did and used the original one.

A4 poster

This morning Mark emailed this. He sent me a psd file of the poster.

The original file that he sent me, the background was quite dirty. I was going to sort this out in Photoshop, but I received another email saying that he would sort it out and reshoot.

I really like the look and the bottles lined up. However I wasn't to sure on all the text being at the bottom right hand corner.

I tried by moving the top bit of text to the left hand side so that it was the text on the right.

I then tried having it at the top left side of the page, which I thought worked quite well. On having a closer look at the text on the right, I didn't think the last line worked overly well. You don't tend to see the Facebook name, Twitter name and email address all on one line and I thought that it looked quite messy liked that and that it need all needed to be on separate lines. In Illustrator I made the suitable icons, I thought as well that it would easily be identifiable if the text is next to an icon. Once I had done this I emailed it to Mark to see what he thought. He wasn't overly keen on the BA & FdA Digital Media Design Show being at the top of the page, he thought that it looked cleaner being at the bottom above the other information.

I wasn't overly sure, as I preferred it with it being a long the top. However I tried again with having it on the bottom right and I think having the whole thing on one line looks better than it had originally when the BA & FdA was on a separate line. I also did a bit of touching to the bottles as well.

Progress

During the weekend, I have been in contact with the group through Facebook and email.

This is the first poster which I sent the group for feedback. Thinking about the OFF posters, I tried having the title with the opacity turned down over the top of the main image. The OFF posters also had the other information turned on its side, which I tried here. I also got rid of the background as well.

I then tried different positioning of the title, as well as having the background back.

This is the feedback that I got from sending the four different layouts.

Based on the feedback I changed the positioning of the title. I also moved the text with the date and location so that it was horizontal and sat along the bottom of the page.

This is again the feedback that I got back.

I found that duplicating the layers of the text made the it brighter and slightly thicker as well which made it stand out more.

During our meeting today, we caught up on what we've been up to. We looked at the video and discussed it as well as the poster I had been working on. We spent quite a bit of time playing around with positioning for the text.

This was our starting point today. We selected the layer of the photo, and changed the curves on it to make it lighter, and I think that it looks really good.

We then tried the text at the bottom of the page in the space in the cabinet. The layers of the text were duplicated to make the text stand out more. After discussing it and agreeing to stick to this position for the text, we then went on to think about the background. We quickly tried a black background to see what it would look like.

This is the result of the background, and we were really pleased with the outcome. Finally after doing this we then started the discussion for the A4 poster. Mark had an idea about lining up the bottles, which would make it a landscape poster. He said that he would take the relevant photographs for it as he has all the bits and would email when he had done it.

Final Idea!

In the email they said that they decided to go back to the Mad 4 It title, but instead of the t-shirts, the idea surrounded on people with compulsive behaviour, which I thought sounded really good especially in relation to the title we picked. The idea of the compulsive behaviour was having a guy tidying up his medicine cabinet. In the email they said that "people are mad about stuff, we are mad about digital media."

I was emailed this as well, which helped me to get an idea about the concept.

In the dropbox link I was sent, it contained the relevant images that I needed for the poster, which they took whilst filming the video. I was told that I needed to give it a professional treatment on Photoshop as the photos were a bit dark and the look for the posters needed to be professional.

In the email were these posters from OFF, this gave me pretty good idea about the look for the posters. It needed to be clean and professional looking.

Change of plan

I've missed a couple of days of seeing the group due to an accident that I was in, however I've been in contact with the group and they told that the tea/cake break idea has now been scrapped. When they told me I was unsure as what the plan was now going to be and I felt a bit in the dark about what was happening, I emailed and messaged them so that I can keep on top of what was going on. I found that not being there put me behind and meant that I wasn't able to be in the discussion about what going to be happening and what was happening at the time.

Although quite a few times about what was happening with the project, I was emailed on Friday afternoon explaining what was now happening with the project and what I needed to do for it.

Cake

When we weren't at college, we were constantly communicating through Facebook and emailing with ideas and thoughts.

Maribel was kind enough to email me the files with the images that she was using, so that I could make tweaks and come up with own interpretation.

These were two of the posters which was in the folder that she sent. The poster on the left was the one I wanted to tweak the most and I redrew it using Illustrator.

I found an image of a plate of cupcakes and traced them. I then filled it with a brown cake looking colour. The bottom of the cakes is made up of two layers, the bottom layer is the same colour as the top of the cake. The top layer is white with the opacity turned down to about 45%, I did this to make it look as though the cake is in a case. I used a pink colour as part of the icing for the cake and white and blue for sprinkles. I used the font which Maribel had sent, which was Bubblegum. I also used the icons which she sent, however I did change the cake icon so that was similar to one of the cakes on the plate.

New Idea

After we discussed the ideas and the work that we had done over the weekend, we went off the idea of the t-shirts and instead more towards Maribel's idea. She sent this:  "what about that MAD4IT show is in a snack van that will travel to clients to offer snack at tea time at the same time of showing our work?"

"We can use ipad, printed work or Augmented reality.... We can offer them a Tea Break showcase."

When we saw each other next we had quite a discussion about the idea and how it would work.

We were working out how we could use the concept of the tea break into the design of the posters and video. We decided to change the name from Mad 4 It to Made 4 U. Having a cake stand with different cakes to represent the different elements of the show was suggested and we looked up images to have a bit of an idea. Another suggestion was having a table, with a 'pretty' tablecloth which had a plate of cupcakes on top them it would have the letters for Made 4 U. We thought of having other cupcakes which would have the different adobe icons on top.

I had a thought, which I started to sketch and that was incorporating the title of the show in the circle at the top of the cake stand.

I also suggested having like cupcake toppers, which would have images of the adobe icons and perhaps other information relating to the show.
We sketched around with ideas and went off to play around in Photoshop.
We also discussed having a post it note on the plate, which will have the details of the show on it. On top of the cake will have the title of the show.

Ideas

The plan for the weekend was to continue coming up with ideas and on Monday discussing what each of us have been working on and further ideas.

These are some sketches which I came up with relating to the t-shirt idea.

I also had a little play around with the logo idea.

Initial Ideas

To begin with, we started by coming up with initial ideas.

The top few ideas is what I was initially thinking before going into a group of 4 to discuss other ideas. I was thinking about the 70's and 80's as it was something we were discussing as whole whilst coming up with ideas. Marvel was something that I thought would be quite a cool idea to do. Having the posters in a type of comic book style and having heroes and villains as well as the bright block colours. Another idea that I had was retro technology. Thinking about big, brick like mobile phones and bulky computer screens.

After I came up with these, we then joined two groups of 4, which ended up being the groups we'd be working with. In my group was Mark, Maribel and Corinne.

In our group we discussed the ideas we came up with. One of which was the idea of 80's t-shirts with big, bold quotes on it. From this idea it turned us into looking this up and finding quotes and coming up with our own. We jotted them down on a piece of paper as we went along and voted on which one we liked the most. Mad 4 It was what everyone picked.

In Photoshop we played around with the layout of the words as well as experimenting with different fonts.

This led us onto thinking about the font for the information about the location and date. Around one Mac book, we went through the font book and picked out the ones we liked the look of the most. They are all quite similar but these are the ones which we preferred. Out of the list that we came up with, these were two we particularly liked.

On discussion we all drawn towards the Satellite font.

By the end of the discussion, this is what we had.

At the end of the discussion, we decided on our roles. I was going to work on the posters, Maribel and Mark was going to work on the video and Corinne on the signage; email, Twitter, Facebook. Although these are our roles, we will still be giving each other feedback and advice what we've done and what could be improved.
