Making the site

The screen shots above show my homepage. Originally I had it so that it was one list, however it meant that the users would have to scroll down the page. I decided to try having two columns and I thought that it looked much better. Though this isn't what I initial thought when I was sketching, but with my limited knowledge on Joomla, this was the closest alternative to what I wanted.

This is the What is MS? page. I played around quite a bit with the layout, changing the columns, the font and also the ordering of the text.

Collecting Content

Having experience first hand of being around MS, I was able to collect plenty of information. The problem that I had was filtering the information.

These are some of the booklets that I used in order to get hold of content.

After looking through and filtering the relevant, I found it useful to put the content into a word document before putting it into Joomla. This way I could make sure the spelling and grammar was correct.

Icons

After looking at the branding guidelines, I went on to come up with my own icons relating to the topics in my site.

I did two versions of the icons, one in colour and one without. After sketching them, I scanned it and opened it up in Illustrator.

I opened another document up in Illustrator and tried out different versions of the icons.

Research: Charity Websites

I was interested in looking at existing charity websites and seeing their design and layouts. Some of the charities that I had a look at were Cancer Research, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Cancer Research

Homepage

The initial layout of the homepage is really simple and the content is aligned in the centre of the page.
The content on the page appears to be stacked down the page. There is a really simple colour scheme, which is used throughout the whole site; the colours, which they have used, are black, white, grey, pink and blue. The pink and blue have been used as part of the heading colours and also as the fill colours for the boxes and circles containing links and information. The majority of the font is in black, however there are some parts on the page in which the text is either in pink or white. The font is really simple and is clear the audience to read.
On the homepage the content and links are all to do with the four pages on the website.

Navigation
The navigation is clear and easy to use. It remains at the top of the page throughout the whole site. There are quite a lot of sections within the site, which are clearly divided into different categories.

About Cancer page
The layout on this page is very much the same as the homepage, in terms of the content being aligned in the centre. This page is like a homepage for this particular section. In the main body of the page it has been divided up into four boxes, which are the inner sections of the page. In the four sections there are links, which lead on to other pages related to the section. The colours are the same as the homepage, but they have used a blue/purple colour, which is really light as the fill colour for some of the titles and a banner, which is just underneath the navigation. In the footer of the page, which is the same throughout the site, has links to their Facebook and Twitter pages as well as other useful links, which are not in the top navigation.

The pages within this section have again the same layout. There aren’t really any images on the pages, which makes the pages fairly text heavy. On the couple of pages, which I had a look at; it mainly contained lists of links that takes you onto further pages.

Support Us page
The layout on this page is very much the same as the homepage, in terms of the content being aligned in the centre. Like with the previous page, this page is used as a homepage for this particular section. Unlike the previous page where there were four boxes in the main body, which contained links this page contains six boxes with the titles of the inner sections and images relating to the different section with some text and the link at the bottom of each box. Under the six boxes there are some further links, which aren’t in any box, but just positioned in the white space just above the footer. The colours are the same as the homepage. In the footer of the page, which is the same throughout the site, has links to their Facebook and Twitter pages as well as other useful links, which are not in the top navigation.

How the pages within this section are set out are very much the same as the layout of the support us homepage. There are quite a lot of images compared with the amount of text.

Fundraising and Research page
The layout for this page is very much the same as the previous page. Again this page is used as a home page for this particular section and in the main body it contains boxes, which contains the title of the section, images and some text underneath it. The colours are the same as the homepage. In the footer of the page, which is the same throughout the site, has links to their Facebook and Twitter pages as well as other useful links, which are not in the top navigation.

The pages within this section are mainly text based, with a small image next to the text. The layouts of the pages are very much the same to the About Cancer page.

About Us page
The layout for this page is very much the same as the previous couple. Again this page is used as a home page for this particular section and in the main body it contains boxes, which contains the title of the section, images and some text underneath it as well as the links to the pages. The colours are the same as the homepage. In the footer of the page, which is the same throughout the site, has links to their Facebook and Twitter pages as well as other useful links, which are not in the top navigation.

The pages within this section are a mixture of text, images and videos. The layouts of the pages are quite different from the previous ones, however they each contain links to further pages on the site.

Parkinson’s

Homepage
The overall layout for this page is fairly simple and also clear. Like with the Cancer Research website, the content is aligned in the centre. The content in the main body is stacked and has been divided up with the use of different coloured backgrounds. The colour scheme for the website is really simple and is used throughout the whole website. The colours, which they have used, are black, white, grey and a couple of shades of blue. The grey and the blues have been used to divide the page up as well as being the fill colour for some boxes where they have also used black. The font is really simple and is clear the audience to read. The font colours are made up of black, white and blue depending on the colour of the background, for example when the background is black than the colour of the font is white however if the background is grey than the font colour is either black or blue.
The content on the homepage is made of a mixture of text and images and also links. The links are in bold whereas the rest of the text that isn’t is a link is normal.

About Parkinson’s page
The layout on this page is fairly similar to the homepage in relation to the content being aligned in the centre. Like with the previous website, this page is like a homepage for this particular section with there being a vertical navigation down the left hand side. As well as the navigation there is also boxes which contain the title of the section, an image and little bit of text which is similar to what its like in the Cancer Research website. The colours grey and white have been used to divide the page. The rest of the page has the same colours as the homepage. A feature, which I thought was quite good, was the up and down arrows on the right hand side of the page, which lets you navigate up and down the page. In the footer of the page, which is the same throughout the site, has links to their different social media pages, as well as other useful links, which are not in the top navigation.

Support for You page
This page is very much the same as the About Parkinson’s page. It has the same navigation on the left hand side as well as in the main body and the arrows on the right hand side to navigate up and down the page. The content is a balance of text, images and links. The amount of text on the homepage for this section isn’t overwhelming, however if you go in the inner sections of the website there is more text and not many images. The colours have also been used consistently as well.

Research page
This page is again very similar to the previous page.

Get Involved page
This page is again very similar to the previous page.

About Us page

Online Community page
This page is again very similar to the previous page.

For Professionals page
This page is again very similar to the previous page.

Alzheimer’s

Homepage
The initial layout of the homepage I don’t think is as simple as perhaps the other two websites, which I have looked at. The content of the website is aligned in the centre of the page. Compared with the previous websites there is quite a lot of content on this page. This website also has a really simple colour scheme, which is used throughout the whole site; the colours, which they have used are black, white, yellow, green and a couple of different of shades of blue similar to the Parkinson’s website. For the main headings they have used the colours blue and green and for more of the sub headings they have used black and white. The majority of the text is in black apart from the text, which is links, and they are coloured in blue. The font is really simple and is clear the audience to read. Unlike the previous two websites where the main navigation bar went horizontally a long the top of the page, this one goes vertically down the left hand side in the main body rather than the header.

About Dementia
The layout on this page is very similar to the homepage. The footer, navigation and header have stayed the same, but the content is obviously different. Like with the previous websites, this page is like a homepage for this particular section. In the navigation bar on the left hand side, under the section you are in there is a list, which is links, to the inner pages of the particular section. There are also boxes, which contain the title of the section; an image and little bit of text which links to the different sections. Unlike with the previous websites they haven’t used colours or lines to divide up the content in the main body. However it does have quite a big footer, which has a whole new navigation menu that’s divided up into four different sections, as well as the alphabet that links to the a-z of dementia. The page has the same colours as the homepage, however the heading is in black, which is different to the homepage.

Local Information
This page is the only one, which is different in terms of the type of content. The layout is pretty much the same as the other pages. The footer, navigation and header have stayed the same. Instead of having boxes with images and text in side this page just has a map of England, which has been divided so that the users can pick that they are from in order to receive and get the relevant information for them. When you have selected which area you are from it brings up a new page with the relevant information. Alternatively instead of selecting from the map there is list of the different areas next to the map also it is listed again in the navigation bar on the left hand side under the title of the section of the page. The colours which they have used to mark out the areas on the map are the same as the colours that have been used throughout the website, green, white, two shades of blue, and a light black.
